Module 5: Assessment
Section 3: Health Inequities
Answer for Health inequalities exercise

Going back to the scenario involving the incinerator in Merryville, what stratification of population groups would be needed to address health inequalities of the proposed incineration placement? If so, how would you stratify the analysis?

Answer:
Yes. It would probably be important to stratify the health impacts based on geographic location and income level, and by school age children. Particularly apparent from the scenario is that the residents of Merryville have a higher poverty rate in comparison to the other county residents. As poverty is associated with lower health status, these residents probably are less healthy than other residents in the county. The addition of an incinerator in their locale could further worsen their health conditions. In addition, the incinerator is proposed to be placed next to a school, so the health impacts on children should be analyzed.
